Urbana Champagne is a small mid-Western university town. Its coffee shops are stuffed to the brim with students doing what students often do in the US: studying as hard as they can to justify the huge cost of education. Life only ever starts in earnest when you graduate. Visiting town for a research meeting, I took the opportunity to sit in one of those Starbucks around campus with my camera and a beautiful 1960’s mid-range Leica lens.
When you look down in the viewfinder (my plug-in one lifts up on a hinge) you become invisible: a man tinkering with his possibly broken camera in the corner… just what a photographer needs.
Her hair was ginger and it matched the table. She wasn’t studying.
